America's Shtetl: LES Walking tour with Guide and Historical Fiction Author

Even if you 'know' the Lower East Side - join us for a new look - through the eyes of the characters in a fascinating historical suspense novel about life, healthcare, and the rise of the Garment Industry - WITH the Author!! See where the main character lived, walked, shopped. Join us on a multi-dimensional trip back in time to the Lower East Side, a neighborhood that was the first introduction to New York and America for many of our grandparents and great-grandparents.

This 90-minute walking tour, led by licensed New York City tour guide Jeff Riback, will be also joined by author Jane Loeb Rubin. Our guide will explain the origins and development of this area, take us to several historical landmarks, and end at the Eldridge Street Synagogue Museum with an inside look at this beautifully restored, late 19th Century temple.

Jane will add commentary through our tour, linking the sites to the setting and characters in her two historical fiction novels. THREADBARE and IN THE HANDS OF WOMEN. We will have time for a brief book discussion with Jane while sitting in the Synagogue. The novels are both are available on Kindle and  paperback on Amazon and other online bookstores. For additional information, see Jane's author website, www.janeloebrubin.comPOPULAR book groups selection!

On your own, strongly suggest a tour of the Tenement Museum afterward (must book this in advance).

Late 1800’s NYC – Jewelry, Buttons and Book Discussion in Montclair NJ

Bring your heirloom buttons to share and join me for a fun afternoon!

Enjoy a salon-like discussion at Gallery Loupe, exploring late 19th century buttons, their role as utilitarian and decorative pieces, a form of self-expression for both the wealthy and poor. Hear the connection to the historical fiction novel, THREADBARE, the second in the Gilded City Series, a riveting story about a woman’s rise in the garment industry in the Lower East Side NYC in the late 19th century.

Hosted by Patti Bleicher, owner of Gallery Loupe, featuring, Barbara Seidenath, professional jewelry artist, and Jane Loeb Rubin, author of Threadbare and In the Hands of Women.

Jane Rubin's suspenseful historical fiction centers on the life of Tillie Isaacson, a smart young girl reaching for the stars, determined to have a future beyond her time. This carefully researched work, set in the Lower East Side of New York City in the late 1800’s when women’s rights were minimal, leaves us contemplating whether history is repeating itself. http://www.janeloebrubin.com

Barbara Seidenath, a well-recognized jewelry artist and educator at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence for three decades, has exhibited at some of the most important museums and galleries internationally, including Munich, the Netherlands, at LACMA Los Angeles, and the Museum of Arts and Design, New York

Location – Gallery Loupe, 50 Church St, Montclair

Time: 1 - 2:30pm
